IVCC Day of the Arts

March 24, 2018 @ 1:30 pm - 6:00 pm

Illinois Valley Community College will host the third “Day of the Arts!,” a  free celebration that runs from 1:30 to 6 p.m. Saturday, March 24.
Community members and their children are invited to sample the arts at IVCC. Upon arriving, visitors will be able to see the unveiling of the Olio curtain. The 13 x 20 curtain, dating from the turn of the 20th century, hung in the “Coliseum” opera house in Ladd.
It is painted with a landscape scene surrounded by the names of local businesses sponsoring the curtain. After the Olio was donated to IVCC, the Humanities, Fine Arts, and Social Sciences Division brought in nationally-prominent conservators to restore it with the help of students, faculty, and community members.
Other activities include a cello duet, display of a student Art Show, and performances by the Choir, the Jazz Band, and piano performances. Visitors can also choose a workshop to attend, which includes improv, storytelling, and creative writing.
Most events take place in the newly named Dr. Mary Margaret Weeg Cultural Centre, which aims to become “a hub of creative activity in the Illinois Valley,” said Dean of Humanities, Fine Arts and Sciences Dr. Robyn L. Schiffman.
“We celebrate the Arts at IVCC each day in our classrooms but the Day of the Arts gives us the opportunity to showcase to the community the fine work of our students, our faculty, and our facilities,” said Schiffman.
All events will be indoors.
