MENDOTA – Two deer found themselves trapped in Lake Mendota Thursday. The Mendota Fire Department were called to the lake around 4:30 p.m. after the animals had busted through the thin ice and were unable to free themselves. Firefighters donned ice rescue suits and entered the lake with an inflatable boat, luring the deer back to shore. The deer were ushered out of the area and into woods north of the lake. The Illinois Department of Conservation was on scene as well. The Mendota Fire Department wants to remind everyone thats it’s not safe to walk on bodies of water with ice, even though it may appear to be safe.
