Ottawa High School Superintendent Resigns
The superintendent of Ottawa High School has formally announced his resignation. At yesterday's high school board meeting, Matt Winchester submitted his resignation to the board, which was unanimously passed. Winchester's resignation will take effect on June 30th. Winchester accepted the position to be the Assistant to the Director at the La Salle-Putnam County Educational Alliance for Special Education. He has been serving as the superintendent at Ottawa High School since 2010.
The board also announced that new board members Dave Keely, Andree-Marie Koban and John Levy will take office starting on May 4th.
Man Arrested for Looting Fairdale Tornado Supplies
One man was arrested after he allegedly took supplies from the tornado-ravaged town of Fairdale in DeKalb County. The DeKalb County Sheriff's Office says 45-year old Richard Burtch of Stillman Valley came to Fairdale on several occasions after helping a family member clean up their property and loaded his vehicle with donated supplies. Authorities say they went to Burtch's residence, where they located 35 brand new tubs still in their boxes, along with eight tubs filled with donated items, three wheel barrows and over a dozen rakes, shovels and brooms. Burtch was arrested and charged with looting and attempted looting and was taken to the DeKalb County Jail, held on a $50,000 bond.
Chicago Couple Found Guilty in Indonesia
An Indonesian court has found a Chicago couple guilty of premeditated murder in the death of the woman's mother on the resort island of Bali. The Denpasar District Court ruled Heather Mack and Tommy Schaefer intentionally killed Sheila von Wiese-Mack while vacationing last August. The three-judge panel sentenced Schaefer to 18 years in prison and Mack to 10 years.
Illinois Prison Financial Problems
The new prisons director in Illinois blames union contracts for many of his department's fiscal problems. Donald Stolworthy says in a memo to the governor that overtime costs in the Department of Corrections have skyrocketed in recent years. A union spokesman says all the overtime is the result of a lack of staffing at the state's prisons.
Candidates for 18th District Race
The son of former White House cabinet member and longtime Congressman Ray LaHood remains the overwhelming favorite as the field takes shape for the race to replace ex-U.S. Representative Aaron Schock. Donald Rients and Mike Flynn have filed paperwork to challenge Darin LaHood in the Republican primary. Adam Lopez and Rob Mellon have filed to run as Democrats.
NIU Assists in Fairdale Clean-up
Northern Illinois University's football team has helped in the cleanup efforts after a deadly tornado in the nearby town of Fairdale. Nearly 100 NIU football players and coaches arrived in Fairdale on Saturday to help residents. They helped clear yards and carry away fallen tree limbs and scrap metal
