Fast food workers from across the country have voted in suburban Chicago to escalate their campaign for higher wages and union representation by including civil disobedience. More than 1,300 workers gathered yesterday in Villa Park. They're pushing for $15-an-hour wages, but industry officials say that would hurt job creation, and that the solution is more education and job training.
Winnebago County Child Abuse
A Machesney Park man accused of battering his girlfriend's 7-month-old child is now facing additional charges of assault that result in permanent disability. Police were called to an apartment in Belvidere last weekend for a baby who had fallen, and noticed bruises on the infant's face and ears. Twenty-two-year-old Dylan Abbott told police the child fell while he was babysitting.
Farmers Rented Land
A University of Illinois economist says farmers who rent land will probably need to renegotiate what they pay after watching corn and soybean prices fall to their lowest prices since 2010. Prices have fallen as the expected size of each crop has grown. Farmers across the Midwest are expecting strong production thanks to a season of good weather.
Cooking Oil Theft
Three men have been charged with felonies in southwest Illinois for what police say was the theft of 10,000 gallons of used cooking oil. Police arrested the three men in a barn where the cooking oil was found. Police believe the cooking oil was being taken from outside restaurants to sell to biodiesel plants.
