MENDOTA - Library sets April events
Graves-Hume Library will host the following event: Family Movie Night from 6 until 7:40 p.m. on Monday, April 29, for Rise of the Guardians. Call 538-51742 to sign up for any or all events.


MENDOTA - Ragtime piano performance
Professional pianist/composer Deborrah Wyndam will give a ragtime piano performance at Graves-Hume Public Library at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 2. Please call the library at 538-5142 to sign up.


MENDOTA - Ministry fundraiser
Orders for the Holy Cross and St/ Peter and Paul parishes' Shine Youth Ministry Meat Sale fundraiser must be picked up at Sullivan's from 9 until 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 11. Every year, Shine Youth Ministry of Holy Cross and and Sts. Peter and Paul parishes sends a team of high school students to help underpriviledged persons. The funds raised from this meat sale will assist in the costs in providing this service.


STREATOR - Vendor fair
A vendor show to benefit the LaSalle County Relay for Life will be held from 6 until 10 p.m. on Friday, May 3, at the Streator VFW. A variety of vendors will be featured. Cash and carry or place an order. Each vendor will have a raffle item. The show is sponsored by DAS Mycogen Seeds Relay for Life team.


MENDOTA - Cinco De Mayo Festival
The Illinois Valley Hispanic Partnership Council celebrates its 15th annual Cinco De Mayo Festival at the Mendota Civic Center on Friday, May 3, from 5 until 8 p.m. to celebrate cultural awareness. This FREE event will feature authentic food, folkloric dancers, raffles, information booths, queen, mini king and mini queen contests and entertainment for all. Cinco de Mayo commemorates the victory of the Mexican army over the French during the Battle of Puebla in 1862. To this day, Cinco de Mayo is celebrated in several U.S. cities with a significant Mexican population including the Illinois Valley.


STREATOR - Relay for Life fundraiser
The Streator VFW will be host to the Mycogen Seeds Relay for Life fundraiser from 6 until 10 p.m. on Friday, May 3. There will be many vendors at the fundraiser as well as items that will be raffled.


LASALLE - Plant sale
Illinois Valley Center for Independent Living and Grace United Methodist Church will host a first annual plant sale Friday, May 3 and Saturday, May 4, in the Grace parking lot on Chartres Street in LaSalle. All proceeds from the plant sale will benefit the programs of IVCIL and Grace.


UTICA - Vendor Fair
The Utica Fire Department will host a vendor fair from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 4, at the fire station. Food will be available for lunch. The fair will feature over 40 vendors. Proceeds from the fair will help purchase a new ambulance.
 

PAW PAW - City-wide recycle/p[lant sale
The Paw Paw Area Chamber of Commercie will host a electronics recycle from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 4, at 362 Chicago Rd., (behind community bldg) Electronics that may be recycled include electronics with a cord or batteries except for the following: NO appliances, a/c's, dehumidifiers, light bulbs, liquid or items containing liquid, gas motors, gas cylinders, or data tapes. TV's are $25 if over 19," $15 below 19" (to cover recycle costs). Any questions please call Stockpiled Electronics Recycling @ 888-223-5577. Please no drop offs before or after time slots! Also, that same day, the Paw Paw Garden Club will host its annual Plant Sale from 8:30 a.m. until 3 .p.m at the Paw Paw Community Building.


MENDOTA - Golf challenge
The 2013 Sweet Corn Classic Golf Challenge will be held at 9 a.m. on Sunday, May 5, at Mendota Golf Course. The challenge is sponsored by the Mendota Area Chamber of Commerce. The four-player scramble is $180 per team or $45 per person and is payable in advance or at time of registration. Call 539-6507 for more information.


OTTAWA - Larvicide training offered
The LaSalle County Health Department, in conjunction with the Illinois Department of Public Health, is hosting a "solid" larvicide application training. The training will take place from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 8, at the health department. Call 433-3366 by May 1 to register.


MENDOTA - Cook-a-Book Program
Graves-Hume Library in Mendota will host a Cook-a-Book for students in grade one through four from 3:30 until 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 8. The program includes stories, a craft and after-school snack. No sign-up necessary.


MENDOTA - Storybook Stew
Graves-Hume Library in Mendota will host Storybook Stew Story Hour for children ages 3 to kindergarten from 3:30 until 4 p.m. on Thursday, May 9. No sign-up necessary.


STREATOR - Country music concert
The 26th annual country music concert to benefit the Streator Firefighters Local 56  will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 11, in the SHS Auditorium. The concert will feature Elvis Aaron Presley, Jr. and the Dan Everhart Band. TIckets are $35 for VIP and $30 for reserved. Call 510-9019 or 488-8411.


OTTAWA - Afternoon tea
The Reddick Mansion Association will host an afternoon tea, "May Melodies," from 1 until 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 11. The menu includes two different kinds of tea, berry scoes and Devonshire cream, cranberry-pecan tarts, lemon bon bons and fresh fruit and cucumber dill, chicken salad and black olive tea sandwiches. The event also includes a performance by Sarah Arter, violinist. Cost is $12 for adults and $8 for children. Seating is limited and reservations are required. MENDOTA - After-school movie
Graves-Hume Library in Mendota will host an after-school movie starting at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 15. Sign-up required. Free popcorn. Children ages 6 and under must be accompanied by an adult.
 

MENDOTA - The Magic Storyteller

To celebrate Children's Book Week (May 13 through 19), Graves-Hume Library will be hosting a family program, The Magic Storeteller, from 6:30 until 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 16. This will feautre family entertainer Chris McBrien's funny, fast-paced ventriloquist and magic show. There will be lots of participation and fun for all ages. Refreshments will be served. PERU - Stress Management Workshop
The 3rd annual Stress Management Workshop is being held at IVCH, conference room A on Saturday, May 18, from 9:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. This event is FREE to the public and a light lunch will also be served at no charge.  Local licensed massage therapists will provide free chair massages and there are lots of door prizes to be given away!  Pre-registration is REQUIRED and seating is limited!  Call NOW (815) 303-7806 to reserve your seat.  Registration ends on May 11.
 

TROY GROVE - Wild Bill Hickok Day
The village of Troy Grove will celebrate Wild Bill Hickok Day from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 26, in the Wild Bill Hickok Memorial Park and Village Park at Mechanic and Ottawa streets in Troy Grove. There will be cemetery walks highlighting Hickok family history, early settlers and Troy Grove's connection to the Underground Railroad lef by Steve Dancey. There will also be wild west skits, frontier gun collection and Will Bill shoot out re-enactment by the Single Action Shooting Society. Plus, free childrens' activities, historical exhibits, music and food available.


SANDWICH - Auto show
The 42nd annual auto show at the Sandwich Fairgrounds will be from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 26, and will feautre antique, classic and special interest cars and trucks. There will also be a flea market, swap shop, cars corral and cars for sale. Breakfast and lunch will be served by the Somonaul Haymakers 4-H Club. Show cars are $10, car corral is $20, swap space is $15 and cars for sale area is $30. Entry fee is $5 for adults. Kids 12 and under are free.


MENDOTA - Bloodmobiles
The Red Cross will host a series of bloodmobiles at Mendota Moose Lodge on the following dates:  June 4, July 30, Sept. 24 and Nov. 19.


MENDOTA - Cruzen' for a Cure
Schimmer's Cruzen' for a Cure Relay for Life Team will host its second annual Drive to Survive Car Show on Sunday, June 9 at Schimmer GM in Mendota. Registration is from 8 until 11 a.m. Entry fee is $12. The first 100 entries receive dash plaques. Judging will be from noon until 1 p.m. with trophy presentation at 2 p.m. All proceeds go the American Caner Society Relay for Life. Rain date is Sunday, June 16. Don't miss food, prizes, raffles, 50/50 drawing and fun.


STREATOR - Bus trip planned
Guardian Angel Outreach, a non denominatonal organization serving mother's and children through the age of 2, is sponsoring a bus trip to "The Shrine of Christ's Passion" on June 19. Departure time is 8:15 a.m. from the old Kmart parking lot. The trip includes transportation by Jeanette Walter, Journey with Jeanette, LLC. and meal. MENDOTA - Railroad Days trip
The Mendota Museum & Historical Society is hosting a trip to Galesburg for Railroad Days on Sunday, June 23. The train leaves Union Depot Railroad Museum in Mendota at 9 a.m. and arrives in Galesburg at 10:22 a.m. A variety of activities will be available including carnival, craft show, flew market, model train and layour show, toy show, antique tractor display and more. The train will leave Galesburg at 7:20 p.m. and arrive in Mendota at 8:42 p.m. Cost is $20 for adults and $15 for children under 12. Call 539-3373 for reservations.

Applications being accepted
Applications for the 2012 Reverend L.L. Henkel Scholarship award, administered by Heartland Bank and Trust Company, are now available to any LaSalle resident who is a 2013 graduating senior or has graduated from a local state accredited high school. Applications are available at the Regional Superintendent of Schools Office of LaSalle County website: http://roe35.k12.il.us.
